F-F or F-F ?
Author: Michael Whited    Created on: 7/5/2012    MessageID: 1515

NASIS (NRCS soil database) require population of a data element termed “Frost-free days.” NASIS data dictionary calls for the 32 F degree threshold to be used when populating the db.
Both a 28 and 32 degree F threshold has been used in the ‘literature’ and the terms frost-free and freeze-free seem to have been used interchangeably by some.
NRCS Wetland Policy and COE Wetland policy define the estimated “Growing Season” for wetland hydrology using the 28 F threshold.
NRCS National Climate Center uses 28 F threshold for “freeze” and 32 F threshold for “frost”.
What to do? Currently we are entering Frost-free in NASIS based on 32F threshold, this is in conflict with NRCS’s climate experts (National Water & Climate Center) and the NASIS entry is not used / in synch with the 28F threshold used by Field Offices for Growing Season.
I have tried to point out this issue and ask for clarification or a re-think. Never got any bites.
