Heroes & Friends

Those were the years of my coming of age;
I thought the days would never end.
Life was tough and I was scared, but somehow I survived.

Not all of us were the best of friends, some I barely got to know.
Can't say I was always nice to everyone, either
but I would change that now if I got a second chance.
Though I seldom let you know, you were all either heroes or friends.

The heroes were the guys and girls who competed on the field or court.
Thank you for the excitement and the memories.
You wore our colors and did your best, you stood up for all the rest.
We could not all be out there but those that dreamed they could
were filled with pride and lived those dreams through you.

Other heroes excelled above and beyond the day-to-day.
You were great students, so smart! Thank you for leading the way.
Some were challenged in mind or body, but your spirit never failed!
You were great artists, speakers, singers, actors, dancers, musicians,
writers, and photographers too.
You had more talent or ability or just worked harder than most,
and we were inspired by you to rise above and reach for the stars.

The friends were those who offered a hand, a smile, a kind word,
or just invited others to spent time so they would not be alone.
We had some fun, didn't we? We cried and laughed and cursed and grew.
To all my heroes and friends, I want to say "Bless you" and
"Thanks for being there for me when I needed you the most."
